Former Tigers Pitcher and Worcester native Mark “The Bird” Fidrych was found dead today on his farm in Northborough, Massachusetts.He was the victim of an apparent accident.  Fidrych was found by a family friend underneath a pickup truck on which he appeared to working at the time of the accident.
Worcester District Attorney's office announced on Monday.

The D.A.'s office said Fidrych was found by a family friend underneath a dump truck at his Northboro home around 2:30 p.m. He appeared to have been working on the truck at the time of the accident.

Fidrych was known as "The Bird" for his colorful antics on the mound. He was also famous for talking to himself and to the baseball.

Fidrych was a Northboro native and played his high school ball at Algonquin Regional and Worcester Academy.

Drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 1974, he won Rookie of the Year honors in 1976. A torn rotator cuff ended his career at the age of 29.
He was just 54 years old.
