newlogomsuApril showers bring May flowers ... and apparently a new logo for Michigan State University.

The classic Spartans gladiator helmet will get a makeover this spring, according to Heather Swain, Assistant Vice President for University Relations, and the school will make an official announcement in April.

The new logo was originally posted on Spartans fan siteSpartanTailgate.com after someone spotted MSU's trademark application on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Web site.

In response to the post, Swain wrote an internal memo, also revealed on SpartanTailgate.com, to help employees answer questions about the project.

Swain confirmed that she wrote the memo, but would not go into detail about the new logo, including whether the change would entail a switch from the school's color scheme of green and white.

"There will be a variety of different elements," Swain said. "I'm sure they'll be released in April.

"It will be a comprehensive package for the athletic department."

The logo redesign is "the result of a two-year collaboration between MSU Athletics and a team of top designers from Nike."
