(Detroit, Mi -- Dec 7th, 2008) : Are the Detroit Newspapers planning on ending daily print circulation to all subscribers ?
In a story we first caught wind of just this week the Detroit Newspaper group is working on a plan to end daily circulation of its paper directly to subscribers.
The Mon-Tue-Wed-Thu edition of the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News will be available at newspaper boxes and bulk outlets. But daily delivery to subscribers will cease.
As far as we have been able to determine subscriptions will still be sold, but the paper will be delivered electronically and in PDF format only to those subscribers.
Fri-Sat-Sun papers will still be delivered, though will still be wholly downloadable and those subscribers who wish to opt out of home delivery of the paper edition can.
The Detroit Newspaper Group sees this as a last ditch attempt to save the papers. Michigan's economic environment and the Auto Industry being on death's door have impacted the two daily papers severely and only the drastic cost savings from not printing is seen as a viable plan to save the papers.
This is not a reduction in content, the whole newspaper as it currently exists would still be produced, it just won't be printed and delivered to homes.
The plan will be to dramatically cut what is available online, making for more exclusive content available to subscribers only. Alternative content will be made available online, however, it won't be the same content.
Substantial job losses will also accompany this announcement.
The time table for the role out of this plan is still in flux.
We will publish more information when it becomes available to us.
