Last night Michigan State Football coach made probably the biggest call in his life, going for the fake field goal in overtime.
Letting everyone know immediately after the game that the team called the play, Little Giants, the Spartan head football coach looked almost smug running over to shake Brian Kelly's hand and gloat in victory.
Evidently, the pressure of Dantonio's huge cajonoes were more then his heart could handle as he was taken to a Lansing area hospital with reported heart pain.
Reports first started coming out when Danontio did not appear on the morning Spartan TV shows and live recap radio shows.
WDFN's Jennifer Hammond tweeted the condition at 10:34am and Michigan State AD announced that MSU will be holding a press conference at 1pm to discuss Dantonio's condition. Detroit TV7 is reporting it as well : http://www.wxyz.com/dpp/sports/msu-football-coach-dantonio-reportedly-suffers-heart-attack
So give Dantonio credit for pulling out all the stops. And for planning to do that all along.
"We practiced the play all week," Bates said. "We really wanted to run it. Coach D wanted to run it. He loves running fakes, especially ones that he draws up. And that was one of those."
This was one of those signature moments, perhaps. You could see that in the smile that Dantonio couldn't avoid in the postgame press conference. He played to win, and he won, and that's as good a feeling as a head coach can have.
Interestingly enough.. it looks like the play clock has actually expired before the snap.. Spartan Bob lives.. but then that's an argument for another day.
